What We Learn Becomes Part of Who We Are

I was around 8 years old when my Aunt Alice taught me how to sew a quilt. I can still remember loving the process. We shopped for fabric, looked at patterns, and I clearly remember feeling confident. I was not afraid to TRY or make mistakes. Aunt Alice had my back. She encouraged me and helped correct my errors — she was and still is a great teacher. Making my quilt was a lot of work and even an arduous project, but 30+ years later, I look back at those memories and can’t help but smile. I was a lucky kiddo.

As much as I loved sewing, I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t pursue the craft while growing up. I’m not exactly sure why. I suppose the motivation wasn’t there. But over the past few years I’ve been having fun making a few small gifts for friends and family: burp cloths, baby blankets, pillow covers. And then last December my parents bought me a Brother Sewing Machine (queue the choir).

Recently, I visited City Sewing in St. Louis to attend a Sewing Machine Basics course led by Anne. I LOVED IT! I know, I know. One could say I could watch a YouTube video or read my manual, but having a one-on-one session with Anne made all the difference. Plus, like my Aunt Alice she instilled confidence by encouraging me to ask questions, allowing me to practice, make mistakes, and gave advice when needed.

My homework is to keep practicing, which I will. I also plan to take a few more classes and hope to recruit a friend or two to join me in the fun.

Whatever hobby you want to pursue, I encourage you to set aside some time and do it — no matter how busy life is. Treat yourself to things that make you happy.
